This urge, this longing
Spirit of belonging
Recollection of childhood
Wishing for forgiveness
Picking up where life had left off
Yom Kippur two thousand six
A chance, taken, perhaps never heard
Heartfelt intentions
Seriousness returning to a jaded soul
Looking East towards lost faith
God, ever present but strangely absent
Found wanting amongst every tear
Shed in hope of a new beginning
Realization of every error
Washing down cheeks saddened by truth
A vanishing smile replaced with guilt
Past sins, a burden on a heavy mind
Relinquished with pain under pressure from conscience
Meeting their maker on the way to absolution
Relieving stress for just one moment
First step on a journey to redemption
Seen from above as a homecoming
A return to belief
Acceptance as a Jew
Pardoned as a human being
Yom Kippur
