Looking Forward to What?

What do you have to look forward to?
Cameras catching every sad word
With no tears and a decisive stare
Embarrassment long gone in favor of resignation
Fate, decided a long time in her past, or perhaps before
One word, a sufficient answer
Nothing

Her youth, not really an advantage
Her innocence, long departed
Ushered into a world where nothing matters
Pawns, moved from room to room by financial depravity
Victims, too many to count, unwanted and ignored
One by one, leaving no mark, no legacy
Hung out to dry by a society looking the other way

Convenient, their plight and their ignorance
Spoken in such a mature manner, her defiance
Knowing this would be all she would ever achieve
Happiness? An end, which is nowhere in sight
Mundane hungry days, spent looking for more of the same
Just a child, just another statistic
Sad

Without a smile and without any hope
Certainly without anything that could be called normal
Battling all the odds, just to do battle one more time
Stuck, stuck solid in a place called Hell
With her savior just the blink of an eye and some common sense away
Forever branded as ‘one of them’
An impossible reminder that this is today’s reality
